Visit to NIE by Professors from NeuroSpin

On 13 November 2024, Professor Kenneth Poon, Dean of Education Research at the Centre for Research in Child Development (CRCD), and Professor David Hung, Centre Director at the Science of Learning in Education Centre (SoLEC), welcomed Professor Stanislas Dehaene, Professor Ghislaine Dehaene-Lambertz, and PhD student Monsieur Maxime Cauté to NIE. Professor Stanislas Dehaene is the Chair of Experimental Cognitive Psychology at Collège de France and Director of NeuroSpin, France’s advanced brain imaging centre. He is a recognised expert in the cerebral bases of mathematical operations, a field which he pioneered. Professor Ghislaine Dehaene-Lambertz is a paediatrician and cognitive scientist known for her work on cognitive development. She has done pioneering work using brain imaging in infants and currently directs the Developmental Neuroimaging Laboratory at NeuroSpin, Paris-Sacla. They held meaningful discussions for potential international scientific collaborations on fractions and decimals with NIE SoLEC staff and MOE representatives. The participants separated into 2 break out groups for engagement with the Mathematics and Mathematics Education Academic Department (MME), CRCD, as well as the Psychology & Child Human Development Academic Department (PCHD) respectively. Assoc Prof Teo Wei Peng, Assistant Centre Director in Interdisciplinary Research & Partnerships, Asst Prof Azilawati Jamaludin, Assistant Centre Director in Human Potential and Translation, and Dr Jack Fogarty, Education Research Scientist from SoLEC, each did presentations on the Role of Metacognition in Education, Math Competencies and the Science of Learning, and Educational Insights from Wearable Sensors respectively.
