She once failed almost every subject and hated school – now she’s the teacher who fights for every student

From struggling with school herself to becoming a teacher who goes door-to-door to bring students back to class, Ms Raja Shahridah Raja Suhaini’s journey is one shaped by resilience and care.

The Beatty Secondary School teacher, affectionately known as Ms Shah, was named one of four National Level winners at the Caring Teacher Awards (CTA) 2026, organised by the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, with the support of the Ministry of Education and ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.

Growing up in a low-income family and struggling academically in her early years, Ms Shah understands some of the challenges faced by students from vulnerable backgrounds. Today, those experiences shape how she supports students who struggle with attendance, family circumstances and other personal challenges.

Her care extends well beyond regular lessons. She started the weekly Cooking Sense Series for high-risk students and those with special needs who frequently missed school, using cooking and shared meals to create a safe space where students could connect and open up about their challenges. When students stop attending school, she also visits their homes and continues reaching out even when she is turned away.

Ms Shah’s story reflects the spirit of the Caring Teacher Awards, which celebrates educators who demonstrate exemplary care and commitment to the holistic development of their students. For Ms Shah, success is ultimately about seeing her students grow into independent and good people, and having former students return years later simply to say hello.
