OER Researchers Advance Knowledge Building Pedagogy in Singapore

Dr Teo Chew Lee, Senior Research Scientist at the Office of Education Research (OER), and team have been helping to spread the knowledge building (KB) pedagogy in Singapore. Between the months of September to November, Dr Teo and team have organised a Network Learning Community (NLC) session, and a virtual Knowledge Building Design Studio (KDBS) that was preceded by a Teachers’ Design Session.  

The KB NLC session was held on 15 September 2020. Titled “Exploring Curriculum and Students Discourse with Learning Analytics”, the session saw 18 primary and secondary school teachers share their experiences integrating learning analytics in their classrooms, and the potentials and challenges in facilitating idea-centric discourse and formative assessment.

In the lead up to the first virtual KBDS, Dr Teo and team organised a KB Teachers’ Design Session on 13 October 2020. KB teachers in Singapore joined a global network of KB teachers in a virtual design session to discuss ways to connect research and pedagogical ideas for the KDBS, themed: “Saving Planet, Saving Lives”. The KBDS was held from 23 to 25 November 2020 for students to collaborate, explore and build knowledge, bringing together 57 students and 14 teachers from different primary and secondary schools as well as eight local NIE and international experts from multi-disciplinary areas to foster a real-world KB community that connected students-researchers-teachers to advance ideas for public impact.
