Dr Melvin Chan and Dr Imelda Caleon Present at the ALSET

OER’s Dr Melvin Chan, Assistant Dean (Knowledge Management), and Dr Imelda Caleon, Assistant Dean (Partnerships), were invited to present at the Institute for Applied Learning Sciences and Educational Technology (ALSET) in the National University of Singapore (NUS) on 2 December 2019. In their presentations, they shared with the team in ALSET on the large-scale research studies that they have conducted in Singapore and the lessons that they learnt from these research studies.

In Dr Chan’s presentation titled “Implementing Large-scale Longitudinal Studies in Singapore Schools: Lessons Learnt and Practical Challenges”, he shared about the results and processes involved in two large-scale longitudinal studies, the Core (2018) and the Core 3 research programme. These research programmes were conducted at the Centre of Research in Pedagogy and Practice at the National Institute of Education (NIE).

Dr Caleon’s presentation was on “Turning Achievement Around: Lessons from Two Resilience Studies”. This presentation focused on the key findings drawn from her studies titled “Lessons from Resilience-Nurturing Environments: Classroom Practices of "Turnaround" Teachers” and “Turning Achievement Around: Predictors of Academic Resilience of Academically At-Risk Students in Singapore”.

Thereafter, Dr Patricia Chen, the Deputy Director of ALSET shared her team’s research interests and led an exploratory discussion on possible research collaborations between NUS and NIE.
