CNA938 Rewind - #TalkBack: Singapore ranks high at PISA 2025, but does it reflect the common sense needed in an AI age?

Singapore’s 15-year-olds have once again emerged among the world’s top performers in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025, which assessed students’ ability to apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems.

But do strong PISA results fully reflect the judgement, adaptability and “common sense” that young people will need in an age of artificial intelligence?

Assistant Professor Alwyn Lee from the Learning Sciences and Assessment Department at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, joined CNA938 presenter Daniel Martin to discuss what Singapore’s PISA performance reveals about students’ capabilities and how education can continue preparing them for an increasingly AI-enabled world.

The conversation explored the importance of looking beyond academic performance to consider whether students can think critically, exercise sound judgement and apply what they know in unfamiliar real-life situations.
