Current Research Project: Exploring how integrating hands-on tinkering activities into Primary 4 and 5 science classes influences teaching strategies and student learning. The study examines teacher development, classroom implementation, and the impact of tinkering on students’ self-efficacy, self-concept, and interest in science across academic abilities and genders.

Dr Uma Natarajan

Dr Uma Natarajan is a Research Manager at CRPP. She has several years of experience in research and managerial roles in Singapore and the United States, and her interests include education policy, teacher education, STEM and integrating technology in education. She was a Graduate Research Associate in the early years of CRPP (2004-2007) and rejoined NIE to manage the meriSTEM centre after her return from the United States.
Dr Natarajan has contributed to policy research at the Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR) and was a teaching fellow for the Masters Programme at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She also has extensive experience working for international projects in institutions like the Asian Development Bank, UNESCO, Microsoft and the HEAD Foundation.
Ms Pauline Cassidy Appleyard

Ms Pauline Cassidy Appleyard is the Project Manager of the CORE Research Programme (2004-present), a multi-million-dollar, government-funded, large-scale baseline suite of empirical studies focusing on Singaporean classroom pedagogies. Her role includes budget creation, managing project finances, progress reporting and all aspects surrounding team management and development. In parallel with her project manager role, she manages the practical and logistical aspects involved in running the physical space in which CRPP is housed.
Ms Appleyard moved to Singapore in 2002 and after completing her Masters degree with Curtin University of Technology, Australia. She became a Project Manager with CRPP in 2004 where she has assisted multiple principal investigators with their research projects. Between 2010 and 2020, she worked at James Cook University (Singapore) and Newcastle University (Singapore), as well as in Australia and the United Kingdom, where she managed research projects and postgraduate students. In 2020, Ms Appleyard returned to work in CRPP.

Muhammad Talha

Muhammad Talha is a PhD candidate in the Italian National Doctorate in Learning Sciences and Digital Technologies (XXXIX Cycle) at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. His doctoral research explores learning analytics in blended learning environments, with a particular focus on the design of educational dashboards and data visualization to support meaningful learning experiences.
As a visiting scholar at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice in NIE, NTU, Muhammad is undertaking a six-month research attachment under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Koh, contributing to the LADDER Project “A Multimodal Learning Analytics Approach Towards Learner Dashboards Designs for Better Engagement and Metacognitive Regulation.”
Muhammad’s broader research interests include educational technology, learning analytics, data-informed pedagogy, and digital transformation. His collaboration with NIE aims to strengthen international perspectives on the use of data and analytics to enhance learning and teaching practices.
Wu Mian

Wu Mian is a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Technology (Zhejiang University, China) and holds a Bachelor of Education in Pedagogy (Zhejiang University, China). She is attached to CRPP for 12months. Her research interests are computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL); learning analytics; education data mining; AI in education. Mian's research is focused on exploring CSCL mechanisms, developing and evaluating learning analytics dashboards, and AI in education. Currently she is on using eye-tracking and multi-modal learning analytics methods to investigate how students’ cognition is distributed across the learning environment during AI-assisted collaborative programming. While attached to CRPP, Mian will also participate in CRPP projects, including research design, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript writing, under the guidance of Dr. Lee Vwen Yen Alwyn
