Keynote Lecture: Transforming science education practices in Singapore with AI

Keynote Speaker:

Associate Professor Tan Seng Chee, Ph.D., MEd, BSc (Hons)
Associate Vice Provost (Education Transformation)
Provost’s Chair in Education
Associate Professor, Learning Sciences & Assessment

Synopsis:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way we learn, work, and interact with knowledge. In science education, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance inquiry, personalize learning, and deepen understanding of complex phenomena. This talk explores how science education practices in Singapore can be transformed through three dimensions: learning with AI, learning about AI, and learning beyond AI. We examine how AI can serve as a cognitive partner in scientific investigations—supporting data analysis, modeling, and simulation—while also fostering AI literacy as part of the curriculum. Beyond technical skills, we emphasize the importance of critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and socio-scientific decision-making in an AI-rich world. Anchored in the Practices of Science framework in Singapore’s curriculum, this session highlights strategies for integrating AI without compromising the essence of scientific inquiry. Practical examples, pedagogical approaches, and implications for teacher professional development will be discussed. The goal is to empower educators to design transformative learning experiences that prepare students not only to use AI but to think beyond it—cultivating creativity, judgment, and values essential for the future.
