NTU has launched a pilot app for caregivers in the same community to share support. Prof May O. Lwin, Associate Dean (Special Projects), College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences, NTU, who helms this project, said, “When someone in the family is sick, the caregiver may not know how to connect to other caregivers of people with similar illnesses. Social media platforms such as Facebook are not completely safe as people may use their posts with ill intent. This app can let caregivers interact and share information in a safe environment.” She shared this at the International Symposium on Communication in Health Care jointly organised by NTU’s School of Humanities and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. It was announced at the event that NTU would partner the University of Hong Kong and Australian National University to do joint research to find out best practices in improving communication in healthcare settings. Prof Luke Kang Kwong, Chair, NTU School of Humanities, said, “A doctor’s empathy can win the patient’s trust. For example, if a patient with more complicated glaucoma needs to do surgery again after check-up, the doctor’s empathy will let patients be more willing to accept the treatment suggestion, and also assuage their emotions.”
