Mrs. Lim Hwee Hua, Former Minister, Singapore Prime Minister’s Office, will speak on the role of government in the economy. Addressing issues on how government can foster growth and development of the private sector and whether are there extenuating circumstances that justify state intervention? These questions are as old as the economics discipline itself. However, they remain as relevant to both developed and developing countries as ever. The experience of the East Asian Tiger economies in the second half of the 20th century, as well as China’s rapid development in the last few decades, suggest that government activism and involvement are often prerequisites for successful economic development.
