US attack on Venezuela ‘death certificate’ for UN, will trigger global arms race: analyst

The American attack on Venezuela on Saturday could further undermine international institutions and accelerate a global arms race, analysts warned. Dylan Loh, associate professor of foreign policy at Singapore’s NTU, said the impact of the American military operation on the UN remained to be seen but that the institution had already lost much of its credibility in the eyes of many for its lack of enforcement capability. What happened in Venezuela would “lend extra credence to the idea that major powers are going to sidestep or outright ignore the UN when their national interests are at stake”, Loh said. “It’s not impossible to resolve or settle disputes through the UN, but it is definitely getting harder and harder to envision the US playing that role today,” he added, pointing to conflicts involving Ukraine and Russia, Israel and Gaza, and Thailand and Cambodia.
