Empowering Career Agility: How NTU’s FlexiMasters in General Management Transformed Janisia Chew’s Career
For Janisia Chew, change has always been part of her DNA. After six years at Boeing as a Talent Acquisition Specialist, she felt ready for something more — a broader role that demanded fresh thinking and strategic skills. Encouraged by her manager, she began exploring upskilling options and soon discovered the FlexiMasters in General Management at Nanyang Business School (NBS), NTU Singapore.
“The programme wasn’t just another qualification; it was a chance to transform how I think and lead,” she recalls.
A Timely Opportunity for Growth
Janisia’s journey began with a simple e-blast invitation to a seminar about the FlexiMasters programme. “I wanted something flexible to manage between work, family, and my kids,” she recalls. The structure of the programme-offering carefully curated modules and a hybrid learning environment-immediately stood out. Inspired by alumni sharing their stories, Janisia took the plunge, seeking to equip herself with broader business acumen and leadership skills.
From Specialist to Strategic Partner
Indeed, the impact was tangible. Shortly after enrolling, Janisia transitioned into a new role as Talent Acquisition Partner for Asia Pacific at Bruker, moving from an individual contributor to a more regional and strategic role. “There’s a lot more thinking now-about building talent acquisition strategy, frameworks, and rolling them out in phases,” she shares. The business strategy module, in particular, empowered her to view her function through an organisational lens, connecting Bruker’s vision and mission to HR and talent acquisition initiatives.
Armed with practical knowledge from the programme, Janisia began developing a comprehensive talent acquisition framework for her new employer. “I learned to look at the organisation from the top level and flow it down to the operational level,” she explains, crediting her ability to drive these changes to the insights gained in class.
Learning Beyond the Textbook
Returning to structured learning after more than a decade was daunting, but the FlexiMasters’ design eased her transition. “It’s very digestible-even after being away from school for so long,” Janisia notes. She particularly valued the blend of theory and real-world application, with modules on leadership, business negotiation, and corporate governance proving directly relevant to her daily work.
The in-person classes fostered a sense of community and mutual respect among peers from diverse backgrounds and age groups. “I learned so much from my classmates-some younger, some more experienced. Their perspectives, especially on technology were eye-opening,” she says. Unlike her previous online courses, the FlexiMasters experience built lasting connections and a supportive network that continues beyond the classroom.
Balancing Ambition and Life
Juggling work, studies, and family was no small feat. “Time management was the biggest challenge,” Janisia admits. She relied on family support, especially during weekends when classes coincided with her son’s activities and she often stayed up late to complete assignments. Yet, the journey was made meaningful by the encouragement of her peers and the practical relevance of the coursework.
A Work in Progress, and Proud of It
While Janisia describes her current achievements as “a work in progress,” she is confident that the seeds she’s planted-both in her career and personal growth-will bear fruit. The FlexiMasters in General Management has not only enhanced her employability and career agility but also given her the confidence and courage to lead change and inspire those around her.
Reflecting on her journey, Janisia sums it up: “The programme gave me the confidence to think broader and lead with purpose. It’s about making a positive impact-not just for myself, but for the people and organisations I serve.”
Janisia’s story is a testament to the transformative power of lifelong learning-where ambition meets opportunity, and growth becomes a continuous journey.
