Transforming Audit: From Reactive to Predictive with Data Analytics
What if internal audit could predict risks before they happen? For Daniel Ng, this question marked the beginning of a professional transformation. As a participant in the NTU FlexiMasters in Accounting Analytics and Digital Forensics, Daniel embraced data analytics and digital tools to move beyond traditional, reactive auditing methods.
Today, he leads with a bold vision — transforming internal audit into a proactive, data-driven function that delivers value, insight, and foresight. Once a conventional audit professional, Daniel now calls himself an Analytics Advocate, bridging assurance and innovation through technology.
“I like to think of myself as someone who bridges the gap between assurance and innovation,” Daniel shares. “I love to simplify the complex, turn data into stories, and challenge the norm. My goal is to create value, insights, and foresight for my organisation using technology.”
From static sampling to dynamic risk detection
Daniel’s journey began when he was tasked with spearheading a major data analytics initiative within his department. “We wanted to move away from static sampling towards a more dynamic, data-driven risk detection method,” he explains. This meant reimagining how audits are conducted-using analytics to spot red flags early and make smarter decisions, rather than reacting after issues have already surfaced.
Recognising the need to upskill, Daniel enrolled in the FlexiMasters in Accounting Analytics and Digital Forensics at Nanyang Business School. “The programme offered the right blend of theory and practical application, tailored for working professionals like myself,” he says. “What I appreciated most was learning something over the weekend and being able to apply it immediately at work.”
The power of predictive audit
Daniel’s biggest takeaway from the programme? That audit doesn’t have to be reactive. “With analytics and digital skills, we can become proactive and predictive,” he says. “We’re now able to detect risks earlier and help shape better decisions. This is a major shift for internal audit, moving us from a back-office function to a strategic partner.”
The FlexiMasters curriculum, which covers AI programming, data analytics, data visualisation, forensic accounting, and digital forensics, gave Daniel the technical foundation he needed. Modules focused on building predictive and prescriptive analytics models, applying investigative techniques to identify unusual activities, and using real-world business cases to draw actionable insights from data. “You don’t have to be a data scientist to make an impact with data,” Daniel reflects. “You just need curiosity, the right tools, and a willingness to learn.”
Equipping for a tech-savvy, progressive audit function
Armed with new skills, Daniel now leads his audit analytics initiative with greater clarity and confidence. “The programme has given me a voice in the digital conversation,” he says. “It’s opened up more opportunities for collaboration across departments and positioned internal audit as a more progressive, tech-savvy function.”
Daniel has also found himself mentoring junior staff interested in analytics, creating a ripple effect throughout his team. “It’s energising to see how every module opens a new door. I feel more confident, more capable, and more excited about my profession than ever before.”
Overcoming challenges-and building resilience
Balancing a demanding job, a major transformation project, and family life while studying was no easy feat. “Time management was a real challenge,” Daniel admits. “But the learning was directly relevant and exciting, which motivated me to push through. Reading Python code late at night and preparing case studies on weekends wasn’t easy, but it built resilience.”
Importantly, Daniel had no prior programming experience before the course. “It was a steep learning curve, but manageable with the right effort and support from classmates and lecturers,” he says. The diverse cohort-ranging from fresh graduates to seasoned professionals from various backgrounds-fostered a collaborative environment where everyone learned from each other.
Advice for aspiring analytics advocates
Daniel’s advice to those considering the FlexiMasters? “Start now. You don’t have to wait until you’re ready. The programme is designed so you can pick up practical skills and apply them at work immediately. Stay curious, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.”
As Daniel looks to the future, he’s eager to explore more FlexiMasters programmes and continue driving innovation in his organisation. “Consistency and curiosity are key. With the right mindset, the possibilities for transforming audit and your own career are endless.”
