This ranking, which focuses on single-year and career-long scientific impact, was curated by Stanford University using Scopus data provided by Elsevier through the ICSR lab. Career-long data are updated to the end of 2023, and single recent-year data pertain to citations received during calendar year 2023.
The report, released on 16 September 2024, was prepared by Professor John P. A. Ioannidis from Stanford University. The ranking is based on standardised citation metrics, including h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, and a composite indicator (C-score) that emphasises impact (i.e. citations) over productivity (i.e. number of publications). The list classifies scientists into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification, recognising only those in the top 100,000 (percentile rank of 2% or above) scientists in their sub-fields.
