OER-AST Research Webinar: Towards an Active Citizenship: Nurturing Engaged and Concerned Citizens

On 2 November 2022, the fifth OER-AST Webinar was jointly organised by the Academy of Singapore Teachers and the Office of Education Research (OER). Themed “Towards an Active Citizenship: Nurturing Engaged and Concerned Citizens”, the webinar sought to provide research-based insights on the topic of Character and Citizenship Education.

The presentations, in order of appearance were:

  1. Dr Suzanne Choo, Associate Professor at the English Language and Literature Academic Group (ELL AG) with her keynote titled, “Cultivating Global Citizenship Virtues Through Critical and Ethical Engagements with Stories in the CCE Classroom”;
  2. Dr Teng Siao See, Assistant Dean of Strategic Engagement and Education Research Scientist at OER with her keynote titled, “Navigating Diversities and Differences in Singapore: An Exploratory Study of Lower Secondary Students’ Intercultural Mindedness”;
  3. Dr Phillip Towndrow, Senior Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice with his keynote titled, “Visualising and Performing Character and Citizenship Through Digital Storytelling”; and
  4. Ms Junaidah Jaffar, Senior Specialist (Character and Citizenship Education), Student Development Curriculum Division 1, Ministry of Education with her keynote titled, “What Kind of Citizens Do We Want for Singapore?”.

The webinar concluded with a question and answer segment, moderated by Dr Hairon Salleh, Associate Dean of Graduate Education by Coursework at the Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning and Associate Professor for Policy, Curriculum and Leadership Academic Group (PCL AG), and was attended by close to 200 participants.
