Asst Prof Nah Yong Hwee Publishes in the British Journal of Educational Psychology
Asst Prof Nah Yong Hwee from NIE’s Psychology and Child & Human Development Academic Group published an article in the British Journal of Educational Psychology, titled “The Effect of Diagnostic Labels on Teachers’ Perceptions of Behaviors of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)”.
Due to the fear of stigma that educators may have on students with ASD, parents in Singapore would prefer not to disclose their child’s diagnosis. In Asst Prof Nah’s article, he explains that diagnostic labels provide an explanation to educators for atypical behaviours in classroom settings. This helps in reducing negative impressions that an educator may have on the child.
His article arose from his research study “The Effect of Diagnostic Labels on Teachers’ Perceptions of Challenging Behaviour of Students with ASD”. Asst Prof Nah hopes that the implications of this study will alleviate the fear that parents have regarding diagnosis disclosures.
