Associate Professor Suzanne Choo publishes a journal article, a book chapter and speaks at the International School Chinese Language Education (ISCLE) Conference
Dr Suzanne Choo Shen Li, Associate Professor at the English Language and Literature Academic Group (ELL AG), wrote a journal article titled “The Cosmopolitan Foundations of Ethical Criticism: Perspectives from the ‘East’ and the ‘West’” in the Migrating Minds: Journal of Cultural Cosmopolitanism journal. The article explores the strands drawing from both “Eastern” and “Western” philosophical traditions, offering responses to criticisms of cosmopolitan ethical criticism, namely arguments concerning moral reductiveness and moral determinism.
She has also co-written a book chapter titled “Examining Students’ Critical-Ethical Interruptions of Racial Discourse in Singapore Literature Classrooms” in The Routledge Companion to Literature and Social Justice book, alongside Mr Dominic Nah, PhD student at ELL AG. The book chapter explores how two classes of Singapore Secondary 4 students critically and ethically negotiate invitations to racial discourse in a co-designed Literature unit examining race and identity within a larger research project.
Assoc Prof Suzanne was invited to speak at the International School Chinese Language Education (ISCLE) Conference in Hong Kong, jointly hosted by Yew Chung International School of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong, which was held from the 1 till 3 December 2023. She shared a keynote titled “From Reading the Word to Reading the World: How We Can Develop Critical, Ethical, Global Thinkers through Literature”, where she compared two main traditions of ethical criticism, American ethical criticism emphasising critical analysis of ideologies in texts and the Chinese ethical criticism emphasising sociohistorical engagements with ethical concerns in texts.
