Education Exchange returns with a new season that turns the spotlight on one of the most pressing issues in contemporary life: screen time. As digital devices and online platforms become deeply embedded in how we learn, work and connect, questions about how we engage with screens meaningfully and responsibly are becoming increasingly important for individuals and families alike. Through a series of public talks, this edition of Education Exchange aims to explore how people of different ages can develop healthier, more purposeful relationships with technology, drawing on research insights and real-world experiences to support informed and balanced digital habits. This programme series is organised by the National Institute of Education (NIE) and National Library Board (NLB).

In this Seminar, we'll talk about Beyond Scrolling – Meaningful Screen Time in a Distracted World.

Not all screen time is created equal. In a world of endless scrolling, constant notifications and digital distractions, how can we make the time we spend on screens more meaningful?

Through research-informed insights and practical examples, our experts will explore what meaningful screen use looks like in two everyday activities: reading and finding information to learn and work. They will consider how the digital environment shapes our attention, comprehension and ability to engage deeply with information, as well as how we can navigate digital distractions more intentionally.

Participants will gain practical strategies for making screen time more purposeful, cultivating healthier screen habits, and improving focus in an increasingly distracted world.
