From the 8th to 9th of January 2025, the Science of Learning Education Center (SoLEC) hosted 6 delegates from Seoul National University (SNU), Korea. The delegates included Dr Young Hoan Cho, Dr Hyun-Jeong Park, Dr Hyo Youl Moon, Dr Jin-Kyung Lee, with Ph.D. student Ms Hyeeun Kim, and master’s Student Ms Bookyung Shin from SNU’s Department of Education and Learning Sciences Research Institute. The delegates were hosted by Professor David Hung, Centre Director at SoLEC, Assoc Prof Teo Wei Peng, Assistant Centre Director in Interdisciplinary Research & Partnerships, and Asst Prof Azilawati Jamaludin, Assistant Centre Director in Human Potential and Translation. During the 2-day visit, they presented topics on learning data ecosystem and digital phenotyping. They shared about the Learning Sciences Research Institute in Korea and the data collected from their longitudinal studies, including their study involving human-artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration. Additionally, SoLEC education research scientists (ERSs) like Dr Aishah Abdul Rahman, Dr Yuvaraj Rajamanickam, and Dr Tan Ser Hong presented on their projects such as “Executive functioning in the classroom”, “Recognizing boredom in learning contexts using Multi-modal physiological signs”, and “Digital phenotyping” respectively.
The SNU delegates paid a visit to Fuhua Secondary School with Dr Lim Yang Teck Kenneth, Senior Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP), to learn more about the school classroom set-up in Singapore and how learning sciences with AI could be integrated into the curriculum. After which, discussions between the SNU delegates and SoLEC ERSs were held to brainstorm on potential ideas for research collaborations with the 2 organisations. The topics that both organisations were interested in developing and exploring further include analysis of learning data of K-12 students on a national level in Singapore’s student learning space and potentially curriculum of learning sciences and science of learning for students in the National Institute of Education (NIE). SoLEC ERSs and the SNU delegates managed to attend the DRivers, Enablers, and pathways of Adolescent development in Singapore (DREAMS) symposium hosted by NIE, to discuss about longitudinal study about Singapore adolescents and listened to talks by well-known speakers such as: Professor Kenneth Poon, Dean of Research at the Office of Research (OfR) and Centre Director at the Centre for Research in Child Development (CRCD), Professor Alissa Goodman, Professor Kathy Sylva, and Professor Robert Crosnoe.
