PhD student Feng Yikang reveals severe decline of the Mekong river plume
The Mekong, Southeast Asia's longest river, plays a crucial role in regulating the ecology of marine fisheries, replenishing coastal mangrove substrates, and maintaining the stability of the Mekong Delta, a vital food source for Asia and beyond. Using remote sensing and geospatial analytics, NIE PhD student Feng Yikang revealed for the first time that the Mekong plume is rapidly declining, with potentially serious implications for fisheries, mangroves, and local livelihoods. This novel study was published in the Journal of Hydrology, a leading journal in hydrological sciences. The research was supervised by Assistant Professors Edward Park and Wang Jingyu from the NIE Humanities and Social Studies Education (HSSE) department.
