Assistant Professor Ong Yann Shiou speaks at the Conference on STEAM Education and Beyond
On 5 July 2024, Assistant Professor Ong Yan Shiou, Assistant Professor at the Natural Sciences & Science Education Department (NSSE), was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the Conference on STEAM Education and Beyond held at The Education University of Hong Kong (Tai Po campus) in Hong Kong. The keynote speech titled “Productive STEM Learning Environments and How to Design Them”, explores more on the Productive Interdisciplinary Engagement (PIE) framework, adapted from Engle and Conant (2002)’s original Productive Disciplinary Engagement framework. The PIE framework includes four design principles aimed at developing students’ group-based interdisciplinary decision-making to achieve good solutions to STEM problems i.e., their productive interdisciplinary engagement. Asst Prof Ong also shared examples of how the PIE framework has been used, including the development of the integrated STEM Classroom Observation Protocol for researchers and the STEM Learning Experience Reflection Tool 2.0 for educators.
