Rigorous Dual Degree Programme Expected to Attract Highly Qualified Students

December 13, 2024 - Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Tsinghua University’s School of Journalism and Communication to launch the Master of Journalism and Communication – Master of Media and Communication Dual Master’s Degree (MJC-MMC). This innovative programme enables Tsinghua University students to pursue advanced studies at both institutions, gaining a valuable cross-cultural education in journalism and media communication. This immersive and interdisciplinary programme is designed to respond to the burgeoning demand for skilled communication leaders.

Programme Structure and Benefits
Interested applicants in the Dual Master’s Degree Programme will first apply to the Tsinghua University Dual Degree Programme. Upon enrolment, participants will spend their first year at Tsinghua University in Beijing in the Master of Journalism and Communication. The second year will be conducted at NTU, where students will be enrolled in the Master of Media and Communication programme. The programme concludes with students returning to Tsinghua University to complete their dissertations.

Graduates of the dual degree programme will learn about theories and industry-applicable knowledge in business journalism, strategic communication, leadership, media management, public engagement, media governance, and data analytics. Students will also have opportunities for overseas immersion in global hubs such as France, the USA, and Australia. This exposure equips graduates to excel in a global media landscape in two major economic zones and emerge as leaders in the communication field.

Institutional Excellence and Strategic Partnerships
NTU’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information is a leader in Communication Studies, ranked #1 in Asia and #4 globally by QS Rankings 2024. Tsinghua University’s School of Journalism and Communication is ranked #1 in Mainland China and #38 globally for Media Studies. This collaboration combines the strengths of both institutions, offering a comprehensive educational experience. WKWSCI’s Master of Media and Communication (MMC) programme is tailored to equip early- to mid-career professionals with advanced skills to excel in the rapidly evolving media industry. Through a carefully designed curriculum that includes core modules and electives, the programme offers four specialised tracks: Strategic Communication, Media Policy and Public Engagement, Leadership and Transformation, and Data Technology, Platforms and Society. These tracks blend theoretical insights with practical expertise, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to address the challenges and opportunities of the modern communication landscape.

“This collaboration enables us to design an innovative and adaptive curriculum in four major tracks, reflecting the dynamic nature of the global media landscape. By combining the strengths of NTU and Tsinghua, we are setting a new standard in media education that prepares students to lead and drive change," said Jack Qiu, Chair, WKWSCI and Shaw Foundation Professor.

“This partnership signifies a strong collaboration between the two institutions in journalism and communication education, aiming to advance global innovation in science and technology communication. It provides international students various learning and development opportunities, fostering interdisciplinary talents with global competitiveness.” Qing'an Zhou, Dean and Professor of Tsinghua University’s School of Journalism and Communication, emphasised.

The new programme, first initiated by Associate Provost and President’s Chair Professor May Lwin during her appointment as Chair, WKWSCI, aims to attract top-tier students and further strengthen our global academic ties. Reflecting on the significance of this partnership, Professor May Lwin shares: "This exciting programme is unique in offering the bicultural, immersive experiences from NTU & Tsinghua, two of the world’s top universities, to provide students with valuable skills and knowledge that go beyond academics. They will develop the skills needed to succeed in our interconnected world, refine their cross-cultural communication abilities, and cultivate a deeper understanding of how their education can make a positive impact globally."

Application Information

The programme's first cohort will commence in August 2025, with applications now open. Prospective students can find detailed information and application guidelines on Tsinghua University’s official website.
