Supporting Impactful Research: MOE AcRF Tier 1 Grant Awarded to Asst. Prof. Cheryl Julia Lee

Assistant Professor Cheryl Julia Lee has been awarded the MOE AcRF Tier 1 Grant (August 2025) for her research project "Smart Nation: A Literary Atlas": A research monograph examining the digital imaginary of Singapore through science fiction.

Abstract:

This monograph will be a full-length study on the body of currently undervalued Singaporean literature, with a focus on English-language science fiction. Recognizing the role representations play in shaping the cultural scripts by which the public understands, assesses, and is integrated into Singapore’s digital agenda, this project combines the discipline-specific methodology of close reading with archival research to clarify how the national narrative around the promise of science and technology is constructed and contested in Singapore and reveal valuable perspectives, expectations, and anxieties about scientific expertise and technological innovation and integration
