GenAI in Language Learning and Assessment

This panel will feature four perspectives on generative AI in the assessment of language skills, including speaking, writing, and reading before discussion with the audience. Vahid Aryadoust will focus on the use of fine-tuning techniques to support teachers in developing in-class language assessments, highlighting practical applications and methodological considerations. Yining Han will provide a concise review of recent developments in AI-driven speaking assessment, with particular attention to spoken dialogue systems. Sha Liu will then extend this discussion by examining the role of generative AI in speaking assessment from a large-scale, high-stakes testing perspective. Finally, Naomi Baron will address the broader challenges associated with assessing the impact of AI on writing, reading, and thinking, with an emphasis on implications for validity and educational practice.

Panelists:

Vahid Aryadoust is an Associate Professor of language assessment at the National Institute of Education of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and an Honorary Associate Professor, the Institute of Education, UCL, London.

Sha Liu is a Test Development Researcher at the British Council. She holds a PhD in Language Assessment from the University of Bristol, and her research focuses on AI-mediated speaking and writing assessment.

Yining Han is a PhD student at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her research interests include technology-enhanced language assessment and research synthesis methodologies in applied linguistics.

Naomi S. Baron, Professor Emerita of Linguistics at American University, is author two recent books on AI and language: Reader Bot and Who Wrote This?.”
