Four final year students from NTU’s WKWSCI are actively promoting the ‘Re-Wired’ campaign to encourage the habit of reducing electronic waste. The NTU students found that as many as 34.1 percent of youth who are trying to recycle electronic waste (e-waste) do not dispose them in electronic waste recycling bins, but through general recycling bins instead. To raise awareness on the importance of recycling electronic goods, a group of environmental student leaders from several local universities pledged to help ease e-waste around their campus and also to the public. Through this campaign, they organised an electronic garbage awareness exhibition that lasted four days at Westgate Mall. NTU student Jason Fan said the idea for this campaign started when they were doing research on different environmental issues for their final year project and found that e-waste is the fastest growing and dangerous waste in the world. Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Masagos Zulkifli Masagos Mohamad, who was the guest of honour at the exhibition on Sunday, urged the students and public to take appropriate steps in addressing the issue of electronic waste disposal.
