Message from Our Staff: To new beginnings

By Dr Lucy Rosby, Senior Lecturer (Medical Education), Lead (Course Evaluation Singapore) and House Tutor (Marie Curie House)

Firstly, a huge congratulations to our newly graduated Class of 2019 who are now busy running around the hospital wards in Singapore taking care of their patients and I hope taking care of themselves too.

And secondly, warmest of welcomes to our Class of 2024. Our biggest cohort to date – I am looking forward to meeting all of you very soon. You will find me wearing various hats at LKCMedicine – teaching you anatomy, reminding you to submit feedback about the course and curriculum, living on campus, organising OneLKC events and in my capacity as House Tutor in Marie Curie House.

In many ways, the beginning and end of our medical school journey pose similar challenges and rewards. We face an exciting transition, in Year 1 from junior college/polytechnic student to medical student, and Year 5 from medical student to the workplace as PGY1 doctors. Never forget your ‘why’ for medicine and you will always find the strength during challenging times.

One truly important focus during both of these transitions is to ensure that you not only enjoy your studies and work but also look after yourself, and each other too.

LKCMedicine is very special in this way — it provides an environment and community which is nurturing not only academically but also personally, ensuring every student is supported by both their tutors and peers, and encouraged to learn and grow to become the best version of themselves in every aspect possible as they embark on their careers in medicine.

It was wonderful to be a part of the recent convocation celebrations, seeing our second cohort of graduates receive their MBBS scrolls. I will be equally proud to see our new Year 1 students donning their white coats — both of these pivotal moments in your medical careers, marking new beginnings and exciting paths ahead.

All the best to you as the new Academic Year begins — new students, current students and students past — keep up your enthusiasm for learning, approach with curiosity, maintain your integrity, focus on your goals and above all, always act with compassion in your heart.
