Pharmacotherapy and Prescribing for Physiotherapists Course
Enhance Your Skills with Our Pharmacotherapy and Prescribing for Physiotherapists Course!
The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), Nanyang Technological University, in collaboration with Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), jointly organises the Pharmacotherapy and Prescribing for Physiotherapists Course (P3C).
The Pharmacotherapy and Prescribing for Physiotherapists Course equips physiotherapists with the essential knowledge and practical skills to prescribe safely and effectively within the musculoskeletal (MSK) scope of practice.
Course Synopsis
This comprehensive programme integrates pharmacological principles, clinical reasoning, and professional responsibilities, allowing participants to gain the competence to optimise patient outcomes through timely, evidence-based prescribing.
Delivered through a blended learning approach, the course combines eLearning modules, case-based discussions, an ePrescribing simulator, and hands-on practicum sessions with standardised patients. This structure ensures a strong balance between theory and practice, equips the participants with the knowledge and skills to prescribe safely and effectively within the musculoskeletal (MSK) scope of practice.
At the end of this course, advanced practice physiotherapists will demonstrate foundational competence in restricted prescribing within the musculoskeletal (MSK) scope of practice. They will understand the pharmacological principles, legal and ethical responsibilities, and clinical application of medicines relevant to MSK conditions. Through case-based learning, practice on an ePrescribing simulator, and medication counselling practice with standardised patients, they will be equipped to prescribe safely, effectively, and in alignment with institutional governance and national regulatory standards. The course will enable participants to contribute confidently to interdisciplinary care and optimise patient outcomes through timely, evidence-based pharmacological interventions.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate an understanding of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics relevant to medicines commonly prescribed for musculoskeletal conditions
- Apply clinical reasoning to select appropriate medications for pain, inflammation, and functional limitation within the physiotherapy scope of practice
- Interpret and integrate patient-specific factors e.g., age, comorbidities, drug interactions, allergies, into safe prescribing decisions
- Navigate the electronic prescribing platform e.g., ePrescribing simulator, to produce safe and appropriate prescriptions
- Describe the professional and institutional responsibilities associated with restricted prescribing, including documentation
- Communicate effectively with patients about the rationale, expected outcomes, and potential adverse effects of prescribed medicines.
Physiotherapists with full AHPC registration and a valid practising certificate, and minimally 3 years of experience working with patients who have MSK conditions.
Why attend?
