The Wonders and Joys of Low-Order Geophysical Flow Modeling
Abstract
Since the advent of scientific computing and modern climate and meteorological sciences, low- to intermediate-order modeling has always been considered a cornerstone of the field, allowing scientists to test their new theories on cases where the effect of parameters and the complexity of model results can be apprehended. Even today, with the availability of modern climate simulations, it remains a means of studying and understanding the Earth system, complementing more computationally intensive approaches.
In this talk, we will present some recent and conclusive developments based on low-order modeling of coupled land-atmosphere and ocean-atmosphere systems. We will also show how, in certain cases, it is possible to relate the results obtained in these idealized models to reality and observations.
Finally, we present a new Python code recently developed at RMI called "LayerCake", designed to facilitate and automate the development of low- to intermediate-order models by systematically calculating the projection of stratified systems of partial differential equations onto specified spatial patterns.
Biography
Dr Jonathan Demaeyer received his PhD in Physics from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2013 and has since worked at RMI in the Dynamical Meteorology and Climatology unit, focusing mainly on Predictability in the context of weather and climate, Detection of weather extremes, Coupled ocean-atmosphere and land-atmosphere modeling, Stochastic parameterization and Statistical post-processing and its operational implementation He has published more than 20 papers in the peer-reviewed literature, two ECMWF letters on the operational implementation of postprocessing, and two book chapters on stochastic parameterization and data assimilation. He is currently serving as manager for the postprocessing module of the EUMETNET Forecasting program, and leading the EUMETNET postprocessing benchmark effort involving scientists from many National Meteorological Services organized on the ECMWF European Weather Cloud (https://eupp-benchmark.github.io). He also acts as task manager for the EU Commission Destination Earth DE330 project(On-Demand Detection of Extremes). He oversees the development of weather forecasts statistical postprocessing and extreme events detection in the latter project.
