An introduction to geometric phases in quantum materials

The next seminar in the series PH4511: Seminars in Mathematical Physics will be on Monday 23rd March at 10:30am and will be contributed by Associate Professor Justin Song of PAP. This seminar series is targeted at students in Mathematical Physics, but everyone is welcome.

Abstract:

Phenomena sensitive to phase information are particularly prized in materials as they often signal inherently quantum processes: e.g., quantum tunnelling, quantum superconducting flow, and coherent oscillations. In this talk, I will introduce a (relatively) recent phase sensitive principle that is currently at the forefront of materials physics and condensed matter theory: geometric phases. I will discuss how and why they emerge and briefly introduce how they dramatically affect the responses of quantum materials.
 
Biography: 
 
Justin Song is a quantum materials theorist and runs a research group that investigate behaviour ranging from correlated electronic systems to far-out-of-equilibrium matter and moiré materials. He is an associate professor and Provost’s chair in physics at NTU. He received his PhD from Harvard (2014) and was Sherman Fairchild Fellow of theoretical physics at Caltech (2014-2016).
