Successful demonstration of second-generation ammonia cracker–integrated solid oxide fuel cell

We are thrilled to announce the successful field demonstration of our second-generation ammonia cracker–integrated solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) prototype system at Jurong Port! This innovative system represents a significant leap toward a cleaner maritime future, delivering reliable power with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Developed by ERI@N researchers, the enhanced prototype features four 27-cell SOFC stacks with a combined output of 2.3 kW. It achieved high efficiency through optimised system configuration, advanced catalyst technology, full heat recovery, and integrated exhaust management. This milestone validates the promise of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier and SOFCs as a viable, efficient power source for the maritime industry.

A special note of thanks to our partners at Jurong Port and Surbana Jurong for their invaluable support in securing the necessary permits and facilities for this demonstration. Your collaboration has been instrumental to our success!

The team also wishes to express our gratitude for the financial support provided for this project by the National Research Foundation Singapore, and the Singapore Maritime Institute under its Maritime Transformation Programme (SMI-2023-MTP-02).

Together, we are steering the maritime sector toward a greener, more sustainable future. To find out more, please contact Dr Ding Ovi Lian [email protected]
