Magnetic Field Mitigation in Near Field Wireless Power Transfer

Abstract
Magnetic field mitigation is a critical issue in near field wireless power transfer (WPT), where strong alternating magnetic fields are required for energy transfer but may raise electromagnetic field (EMF) safety, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and regulatory concerns. Effective solutions must strike a balance between efficiency, cost, and field containment. The seminar will present and discuss advanced mitigation methods, including conductive shielding, magnetic shielding, passive and active auxiliary coils, and appropriately designed compensation networks that influence current behavior and field distribution. Overall, effective mitigation relies on a combination of design optimization, advanced materials, and control strategies to ensure compliance with EMF safety standards (e.g., ICNIRP, SAE J2954), while maintaining high performance and enabling large-scale deployment.
Biography
Prof. Mauro Feliziani received the Laurea Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” Rome, Italy, in 1983. He was with the same university as a Researcher (1987–1992) and Associate Professor (1992–1994). In 1994, he joined the University of L’Aquila, Italy, as Full Professor of Electrical Engineering. At the University of L’Aquila, he served as President of the School of Electronics Engineering (1997–2000) and Head of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (2000–2006). He was also co-founder of two university spin-offs, :WEST (Wireless Embedded System Technology) (2004) and ZeroWire (2021). He is also co-inventor of several patents. Prof. Feliziani has authored or co-authored more than 240 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of wireless power transfer, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electromagnetic field (EMF) safety, and computational electromagnetics. He received several international awards, including the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications Best Paper Award (1995), EMC Europe Best Paper Award (2000), IEEE CEFC Best Paper Prize (2014), IEEE Wireless Power Week Best Paper Award (2019), the 2019 IEEE EMC Society Kanda Award for the most cited paper of the IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility in the past five years, and the IEEE EMC Society Technical Achievement Award (2020). He was a co-founder of the EMC Europe Symposium in 1994 and served in several leadership roles, including General Chair of EMC Europe 2002 (Sorrento), 2005 (Rome), and the virtual edition in 2020, as well as Chair of the EMC Europe International Steering Committee (2012–2015). He was also co-Chair of the IEEE WPTCE 2025, held in Rome, Italy, on June 3–6, 2025.
