WKWSCI Student Tay Yu Xuan Clinches SEA Games Silver

Competing among the region’s top wushu athletes, fourth-year Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) student Tay Yu Xuan clinched a silver medal in the Men’s Taijiquan–Taijijian event at the 2025 SEA Games. 

Balancing training alongside university life, Yu Xuan’s achievement speaks to the dedication and consistency required to compete on the regional stage. WKWSCI supported his journey through flexible academic arrangements, allowing him to manage both his sporting and academic commitments. 

Yu Xuan first discovered wushu at the age of seven after watching his school seniors perform during a primary school event. What began as an early interest eventually developed into a serious pursuit, leading him to specialise in taijiquan after years of training across different wushu disciplines. 

Outside of sport, Yu Xuan also has a keen interest in cinematography and filmmaking, which he explores through his studies at WKWSCI. Speaking to The Straits Times, he shared that both wushu and cinematography require precision, timing, and the ability to tell a story through movement and visual expression. 

Over the years, Yu Xuan has represented Singapore at several major international competitions, including the Asian Games and World Wushu Championships. Earlier this year, he was also featured by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) as a candidate for the 2025 IWUF Wushu Taolu Athlete of the Year. 

Yu Xuan’s SEA Games achievement marks another proud milestone in his journey as both an athlete and student, reflecting the passion and drive of WKWSCI students who continue to excel beyond the classroom.
