In the 2021 Budget and Committee of Supply debate, the government encouraged inclusive usage of technology. Last week, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat also urged those skilled in technology to help bridge the digital skills gap in Singapore. Berita Harian showcased the efforts of NTU students to help senior citizens understand technology. As part of their final-year project, a group of communications students from NTU – Rishiikanthan Vijayahkumar, Wee Ann, Grace Lee Jia En and Lee Jia Qian Febby – created a digital education campaign for needy and illiterate seniors titled #CanOneLah!. The campaign included various initiatives such as workshops, a written guide How Ah?, videos Eh, Hello? and Really Meh?, and several WhatsApp groups. The students were supported by 30 NTU Welfare Services Club volunteers and seven senior citizen activity centers (SAC). Rishiikanthan said it never crossed his mind to become a ‘teacher’ to students who are of the same age as his parents and grandparents one day.
