90 per cent of Singapore university students not aware of hidden sugars in food and drinks: NTU study

Up to 90 per cent of university students in Singapore are unable to identify hidden sugars in food and drinks, according to results of a survey released last Monday (29 Jan) by NTU. Hidden sugars are sugars added to foods and beverages by the manufacturer, or are naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates. The survey on 382 participants aged 18 to 24 from NUS, SMU and NTU found that most respondents do not check the nutritional labels and ingredient list of packaged products. The survey was done as part of the Hidden Sugars, Hidden Risks campaign launched by four final-year NTU students to encourage young adults to make healthier food choices.
