Frequently asked questions (FAQs) for Admissions

General Admissions

What is the implied choice scheme?

Under our implied choice scheme, if you apply for any programme with a second major, you will also be considered for its corresponding programme with no second major, in a manner succeeding any of the 1st to 5th choices if selected in the application form, and if the programme has not been earlier selected as one of the five choices. For example, an applicant indicated 1st choice Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering with a second major in Food Science & Technology, 2nd choice Mechanical Engineering and no other choices. This applicant will be considered for Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering with a second major in Food Science & Technology, Mechanical Engineering, followed by Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. If the applicant wishes to be considered for Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering over Mechanical Engineering, they should indicate Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering as the second choice. To find out more about this scheme, click here.

How do I apply to undergraduate programmes offered by NIE or NIE’s degree in Arts (Academic Discipline & Education) and/or Science (Academic Discipline & Education)?

You should apply under the application group that corresponds to your high school qualification. Once you’re in the portal, indicate Arts (Academic Discipline & Education) and/or Science (Academic Discipline & Education) as one of your choices and complete the online “Application for Teacher” form to the Ministry of Education before the closing date.

University admissions score (UAS) for A-Level students

Expand all

Can I choose the method to compute my UAS (based on the previous or current A-Level curriculum)?

No. The method to compute your UAS will depend on the year you sat for your GCE A-Level examinations and the year of your university application.

I sat my GCE A-Level examinations in 2024 or earlier. How will my UAS be computed if I apply for admission to the university in Academic Year 2027 or later?

For university admission in Academic Year 2027:
If you sat the GCE A-Level examination in 2024 or earlier, your Project Work (PW), as well as H1 and H2 content-based subject grades will be used to compute your UAS. You can offer H2 Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) instead of H1 General Paper (GP) and H1 content-based subject for your UAS computation. We will compute your UAS using the 90-point scale and proportionately weigh that to the 70-point scale.

For Academic Year 2028 university admission:
Regardless of the year of GCE A-Level examination, your UAS will be computed using the 70-point scale.

In addition, your PW grade will not be considered. We will consider you to have met the requirement for university admission if you present a pass grade in PW. If you have previously offered H2 KI instead of H1 GP, we will consider the H2 KI grade as your H1 GP grade in your UAS computation.

Do I need to offer a contrasting subject? Will the contrasting subject be considered in the UAS?

Yes. You have to offer four content-based A-Level subjects of which at least three must be H2 subjects, and at least one must be a contrasting subject from outside your area of specialisation (i.e., subject from the Mathematics & Science domain for students in the Arts stream, and subject from the Humanities & Arts domain for students in the Science stream) that may be offered at either H1 or H2.

For university admissions from Academic Year 2026 onwards, the H1/fourth H2 content-based subject (which may be a contrasting subject) will only be included in the computation of your UAS if it improves the score of students who sat for the GCE A-Level examinations in 2025 and after.

Will I be eligible for university admission if I fail Project Work (PW)?

From Academic Year 2026 onwards, all applicants presenting local GCE A-Level qualifications will need to present a pass grade in PW to be eligible for university admission.

If you are in the 2024 JC1/PU2 cohort and failed PW but are promoted to JC2/PU3, your junior college/Millennia Institute will assess whether to offer you the option to re-take PW in JC2/PU3, on a case-by-case basis.

If you’ve failed PW and are not promoted to JC2/PU3, you will have to offer PW again.

I am a private candidate/I have been exempted from PW. Do I need to offer PW to gain entry into the university?

No, private candidates/students who have been exempted from PW are not subject to the requirement to have a pass in PW.

If I sat my GCE A-Level examinations in 2024 or earlier, will I lose out to my peers with the revised UAS computation method when applying to the university?

No. Admission to NTU is based on open competition and merit. We assess applicants holistically, taking into consideration both academic and non-academic aspects

I sat for the GCE A-Level examination in 2024 or earlier. Will I be allowed to use H2 KI as one of my H2 content-based subjects in the UAS computation when I apply to the university in Academic Year 2027 or later?

No. If you sat your GCE A-Level examinations in 2024 or earlier and offered H2 KI instead of H1 GP, you will not be allowed to use H2 KI as a H2 content-based subject in the UAS computation, as the H2 KI grade will be required to fulfil the H1 GP requirement under the revised UAS computation.

I have a reserved undergraduate programme place, but I want to change to another undergraduate programme. Is that possible?

You may apply as a fresh applicant when the application window opens. If the new application is successful, you may make your final decision between the reserved place and the new offer via the Joint Acceptance Portal.

I have not received my enlistment date and ORD. Can I still apply for an undergraduate programme?

You may leave the enlistment and ORD dates blank when submitting your application and update us once you have received the dates by submitting the enquiry form.

I am serving/going to serve National Service. How do I check if I have accepted the offer, and the undergraduate programme has been reserved for me?

You will receive an acknowledgement letter via email in September of the year of application for the undergraduate programme you have accepted. Transfer applications

Expand all

I’m currently pursuing a degree at another university but wish to transfer to an NTU undergraduate programme. How do I go about doing that?

If you wish to transfer from another university to an NTU undergraduate programme, you must apply for admission via our admissions portal, using the group that corresponds to your high school qualification. If you are successful, you will be admitted into Year 1 and may apply to the relevant School for a transfer of credits for the relevant subjects that you have passed at your current university. Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Can I get a transfer of credits from the courses I’ve previously completed?

Once you have been admitted, you can apply to your School for a transfer of credits. Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and you should be prepared to complete the new programme in full.

I have used tuition grants at my current university. Am I still eligible for tuition grants after I transfer?

Yes. Under the Ministry of Education (MOE) tuition grant policy, subsidised full-time undergraduate students who transfer or are re-admitted within or across NTU, NUS (National University of Singapore), SMU (Singapore Management University), SUTD (Singapore University of Technology & Design), Poly-FSI (Polytechnic-Foreign Specialised Institution), SIT (Singapore Institute of Technology), NAFA-RCM (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-Royal College of Music) or LASALLE-Goldsmiths (LASALLE College of the Arts-Goldsmiths College) are eligible for a tuition grant up to the normal programme duration for the new programme, less the number of semesters of tuition grant received for the previous programme.

For example, if you have claimed two semesters of tuition grants for your current programme, you will be eligible for four semesters of tuition grants (starting from Semester 1) for your new programme whose normal duration is six semesters.

Important note: Students who hold/obtain a degree or higher qualification through subsidy or sponsorship by the Singapore Government will NOT be eligible for a tuition grant to pursue a second degree programme of the same or lower level.

If you graduated from a part-time undergraduate degree programme awarded by then-SIM University and were enrolled in the degree programme between 2001 to 2008, please contact us here for more details on tuition fees.

Indicative grade profiles

Expand all

The grade profiles are taken from the previous year’s admissions. How useful is that for applicants applying for the current year?

Grade profiles are provided from the latest available year as a reference to help applicants make more informed choices about their programme selection.

If I have attained the grade profiles in the tables, will I be guaranteed admission?

No. Meeting the previous year’s grade or GPA of a programme does not guarantee admission to that programme in the current year, as the grade profiles are based on last year’s admissions exercise. The grade profiles of a particular year of application may differ depending on the number and performance of applicants and the places available for the programme.

The admission score of double degree programmes is not shown in the grade profiles. How do I gauge the profile of double degree programmes?

Double degree programmes have already been factored into the single degrees via their home faculties. In general, the double degree programmes are very popular and have small intakes. Applicants to these programmes are expected to have excellent results, as these programmes are designed to be challenging and stretch students’ intelligence.

I have an NUS High School diploma. How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed together with other students holding the NUS High School diploma. We will take into consideration our graduation CAP and subject CAPs. You may be required to attend an interview/complete a written test, depending on their choice of programme.

I have an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed together with other students holding the IB diploma. We will take into consideration your IB score obtained and the subjects you have taken. You may be required to attend an interview/complete a written test, depending on their choice of programme.

Are the indicative grade profiles meant for full-time undergraduate programmes only?

Yes, the indicative grade profiles cover only full-time undergraduate programmes. They do not cover our part-time undergraduate programmes.

For overseas employment, please provide your tax documents from the country of your employment.

What are the tuition fees and other estimated expenses for the part-time undergraduate programme?

The estimated tuition fees for the entire duration of the degree programme are calculated by taking the number of academic units (AU) required to graduate from the part-time degree programme of your choice multiplied by the relevant fees per AU.

The Ministry of Education tuition fee subsidy is capped at 19 AUs for students who fail or repeat modules. Beyond this cap, students are required to pay the full non-subsidised fee per AU. For instance, if the graduation requirement is 112 AUs, the total tuition fee subsidy will be capped at 131 AUs (112 AUs + 19 AUs). Please note that any revision in the tuition fee will apply to both existing as well as new part-time students.

Please note that the fees per AU and miscellaneous fees are subject to yearly increment (if any), at the discretion of NTU with approval from the Ministry of Education.

I have changed my nationality status (i.e., from international student to Permanent Resident, or from Permanent Resident to Singapore citizen) mid-way during my studies. Will I be eligible for a higher subsidy?

Yes, but the subsidy will only be effective for course fees payable from the next academic semester onwards upon your notification to the University. No retrospective claims will be allowed.

To avoid any delay in processing your change in residency or citizenship, please ensure that your personal particulars are updated in our records in a timely manner. We will not be accountable for delayed or lost correspondence due to incorrect or outdated students’ addresses or contact details.

For changes in citizenship, please provide the full set of original supporting document(s) in person at One Stop @ SAC by the deadline stipulated below, for the revised tuition fee rate to be effective. For a change in residency from International Student to Permanent Resident, you are required to submit an application for the Ministry of Education tuition fee subsidy. For submissions after the deadline, the revised tuition fee will take effect the following semester.

Is eligibility for the Ministry of Education subsidy considered only at the point of admission?

No. If you have been admitted without the subsidy, but subsequently fulfill the criteria, you will be eligible for the subsidy from the next academic semester onwards, upon successful notification (with relevant documentation) to the University.

If I have received a partial tuition subsidy previously (enrolled but withdrew from one of the autonomous universities without having obtained a degree), am I still eligible for the subsidy if I enrol with NTU now?

If you are transferring from a part-time degree programme from another autonomous university to NTU, you will be eligible to receive the balance claimable subsidy, subject to satisfying the listed eligibility criteria for the subsidy. Please provide a certification letter from the autonomous university, confirming the number of semesters of previously received tuition fee subsidy.

How can I obtain certification letters from NTU? For e.g., I am transferring immediately to another course of study within the same university, and am not withdrawing from my university, am I still eligible for the subsidy if I enrol with NTU now?

We offer letters to certify the status of students in all our programmes.

  1. For current students and current year graduates: Request via One Stop @ SAC
Processing Time: 1 to 3 working days
You will be notified via email when the letter(s) is/are ready for self-printing.
  2. For past graduates: Request via Service Desk Form
  3. For students who have withdrawn from full-time programmes and non-graduating students: Request via Email. Please provide the following information as registered with NTU in the email:
    1. Your full name
    2. Date of birth
    3. Matriculation number
    4. Programme of study
    5. Email Address

If I accept the subsidy and subsequently withdraw from the course(s) or programme, do I have to pay back the subsidy to the Ministry or NTU?

No. You do not have to pay back the subsidy to the Ministry or NTU if you withdraw from the University without completing the degree programme. Should you choose to enrol in another subsidised undergraduate programme at a local university, you can only use the remaining subsidy.

Is there an exemption from age and work experience criteria for the Ministry of Education subsidy?

You can be exempted from the age and work experience eligibility criteria, if you are:

  1. Sponsored by your company for the part-time undergraduate degree programme
  2. Currently employed in a job role/sector related to the part-time undergraduate degree programme

Notwithstanding these exemptions, if you are National Service (NS)-liable, you must have fully discharged your full-time NS liability before you can be admitted to NTU. We reserve the right to determine if an exemption will be granted, and the University’s decision will be final and binding.

I am sponsored by my company for my part-time degree studies. Can I have the Ministry of Education subsidy and also retain my company sponsorship? How will that affect my fees?

You can still enjoy the tuition fee subsidy if you are eligible for the Ministry’s subsidy. The total fee that you need to pay comprises of the subsidised tuition fee and other compulsory miscellaneous fees. Depending on how your company sponsors your studies, it may pay for all or part of the total fee payable to NTU. The amount of sponsorship will be a matter between you and your company.

You or your sponsor may reach out to our Finance Account Receivable team at nssfar@ntu.edu.sg for more details.

What are the estimated living costs for Singaporean and PR students at NTU?

Estimated living costs

Moving overseas to pursue your education is an exciting prospect, but it is equally important to be aware of the financial costs involved. Besides the tuition fees for full-time programmes, you will need to budget for accommodation, food and transport. Below is an estimate of the monthly cost of living for an NTU undergraduate.

You can also use our financial planner to estimate the financial commitment and your eligibility for financial aid schemes.

Type Of Costs Estimated Amount (S$)
Accommodation (On-campus) S$350 - S$735*
Meals S$300 - S$450
Transport, Books & Personal Expenses S$320 - S$540
Total S$970 - S$1725

*The estimated cost of accommodation is based on the rate of a single room or twin-sharing room.
