Extensions vs Renewals

AUP Extensions are handled differently from Renewals.

An AUP Extension is an Amendment application to extend the validity period of your AUP. Extensions can only be granted up to a max approved period of 5 years.

After the max approved period of 5 years, a Renewal application should be submitted. This is a New AUP application to NTU-IACUC, but the review process will be expedited via the DMR route.

Extensions Renewals
  • An approved AUP can only be extended up to a maximum of 5 years validity.
  • To request for an Extension, please submit an Amendment application via ERMP.
  • The type of review (Admin/DMR/FCR) is dependent on the type of amendment being requested for.

  • For extensions beyond 5 years, a Renewal application should be submitted.
  • To submit a renewal application, a “New AUP” should be selected on ERMP. (A new AUP number will be assigned.)
  • No changes to the existing procedures, animal numbers and species (unless they are teaching or service protocols) are allowed for renewals.
  • Renewal applications will be reviewed via the DMR procedure. Any change in protocol will result in the submission being reviewed as a new application (i.e. via FCR).

For renewal applications, PI to reference old AUP, and provide a document summarising change made with responses to the following queries:

  • Clarify why the study has to be renewed, e.g. procedures could not be completed in time / objectives have changed, etc., and what has been achieved under the original AUP.
  • Indicate how many animals have been used thus far under the original AUP.
  • Provide a tabled summary of differences between the original and renewal applications, e.g. differences in animal numbers, procedures.
  • For newly requested animal numbers, provide a breakdown of how they will be utilized across the procedures described in the renewal application.
