About the competition: The NUS Medical Grand Challenge (MGC) is a student-led medical innovation programme initiated by the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. It brings together students across disciplines and universities to develop innovative solutions addressing unmet healthcare needs, with teams evaluated on factors including creativity, design, market strategy, and healthcare impact.

Product/Proposal: SteadyStep is a smartphone-based neuromotor monitoring platform that was designed to enable accessible, continuous gait assessment and help detect early signs of mobility and neurological decline.
Description: SteadyStep transforms a smartphone into a continuous gait-monitoring tool, removing the need for specialised hardware and enabling users to monitor changes in mobility in everyday settings. The platform aims to detect early indicators of neurological decline, track gait changes over time, and provide personalised insights that can help patients, caregivers, and clinicians take action before a fall or significant deterioration occurs. The project addresses the gap between sophisticated, hospital-based gait assessment and accessible monitoring at home, particularly for older adults.
The team was awarded the Social Responsibility Award at the NUS Medical Grand Challenge 2026, recognising SteadyStep's potential to address an important societal and healthcare need. The project is mentored by Dr Ong Chi Wei and is currently undergoing further development and validation with a gait lab, supporting the refinement of its technology and clinical applicability.
