Pulau Hantu Besar set to be second island made self-sufficient by 2024

Singapore’s Kusu Island has achieved the goal of energy self-sufficiency after NTU’s ERI@N and SLA have completed the installation of renewable energy systems such as solar panels. A S$2 million joint project between SLA and ERI@N, Kusu Island’s solar panel system covers an area the size of two basketball courts. In order to avoid damaging the existing ecosystem of Kusu Island, the panels were installed on the shallow shore in front of Tua Pek Kong Temple.

Plans are on the cards for other Southern Islands to do the same. Similar technology is expected to be rolled out next year on popular diving spot Pulau Hantu Besar.
