Scenes of the riots in Washington DC have gone viral. In the weeks leading up to the riots, there was plenty of violent rhetoric and advice on weapons. Explaining how social media contributed to the chaos in Washington DC, Asst Prof Saifuddin Ahmed from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at NTU said social media played a “significant role in creating a negative, distrustful mindset”. Adding that social media platforms, which are reactive rather than proactive, set a precedent by acting swiftly to block Donald Trump and delete photos and videos relating to the riots, Asst Prof Saifuddin said this shows that social media platforms can do better in such instances.
