As of Wednesday, around 2,900 people were each fined S$300 for not complying with elevated safe distancing measures. Social scientists interviewed felt that many senior citizens are not as savvy as others who make it a point to head out to a park connector or field for example, to get their dose of fresh air. Instead, they loiter around their neighbourhoods. Also, since the community transmission in Singapore is not as pronounced as other countries, NTU Asst Prof Saifuddin Ahmed said these individuals may have a “false sense of optimism” that the virus is not as harmful, and they will not be affected.
