Premier Lai Ching-te said Taiwan plans to promote English as its second official language to become a bilingual country. However, many remain doubtful. Prof Eddie Kuo, Professor Emeritus at NTU Singapore, had his university education in Taiwan and studies sociolinguistics. In an email interview, he said that given the English standards of the current Taiwan society, the proportion of those who can use English is very small. There seems to be no need to use English concurrently, and there is no capability to implement the use of English, “in the end, English will become a symbolic official language”.
