Rendang chicken that is “not crispy enough” works up a storm: Criticisms flood in after judges’ response

Mediacorp Channel 8, 8 Apr

A reality TV cooking competition recently drew a flood of criticisms from netizens after the judges described a Malaysian contestant’s chicken rendang as “not crispy enough”. Wong Pei Wen, a lecturer from NTU’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, said people were upset as the incident stoked their indignation for the contestant, and the dish reminded people of their childhood. She said food can be a bridge for soft power, and it was fine for netizens to express themselves as long as comments online were not too extreme or spreading hate and causing divisions between countries.
