Instagram tests hiding likes but this won’t bring back happiness

Turning back the clock won’t solve the root of our problems with social media, says NTU Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information’s Jung Younbo in a commentary. Instagram has recently tested out hiding the number of likes on each post from some users in Canada. He analysed why people chased after “Likes”, and how constructive destruction may be a reason Instagram is doing away with “Likes”. It remains to be seen if such changes will help the platform get back to basics and rekindle the love of self-expression that made it successful in the first place.
