Parliament's discussion on hate speech and offensive content in entertainment on Monday, coming after Swedish black metal band Watain had its licence to perform here revoked at the last minute, has led some to wonder if this would lead to fewer entertainment and arts choices in Singapore. Asst Prof Liew Kai Khiun from NTU's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information believes that the weight of the government intervention on the small black metal fandom in Singapore has sent ripples across the arts and entertainment industries. He foresees more tension in the future between Singaporeans who believe in freedom of artistic expression and those who are more conservative.
