Age-old issue resurfaces in multiracial Singapore

The Sunday Times, page A14

The issue of racism came up again last week at a dialogue Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam had with students at the NUS, where he fielded questions on the way the Government dealt with the e-payment ad, as well as a controversial rap video calling out racism by YouTube artist Preeti Nair and her brother Subhas that followed. By using crudely brownish facial make-up, Mr Chew had reduced entire minority groups to their skin tones, said Asst Prof Liew Kai Khiun of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at NTU. "It's the same as how Chinese Singaporeans often feel insulted by the slant-eyed and pigtailed yellowface caricatures of them by Caucasian actors."
