“After two decades in communications, I returned to the classroom and found new ways to approach my work.”

After two decades of working in communications with a background in engineering, I returned to university wanting more than another qualification. I wanted to understand the theories and research behind my work, question assumptions I had built up over the years, and gain perspectives beyond my day-to-day experience. The Master of Media and Communication (MMC) helped me connect practice with theory and become more deliberate in how I approach communications and stakeholder engagement.

One of my most memorable experiences was working with my course mates on a brief for the D&AD New Blood Awards. We spent weeks developing and refining an idea we believed in, bringing together research, debate and different perspectives along the way. Seeing our work receive a Wood Pencil was especially rewarding and reinforced the value of creativity, collaboration and perseverance.

The overseas immersion at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity broadened that experience further. Hearing leading creative thinkers discuss how ideas, technology, culture and human behaviour intersect reminded me that even after many years in the profession, there is always more to learn and new ways to think about communications.

Returning to university after many years in the workforce was also an opportunity to challenge myself as a learner while balancing my studies with work and family. I approached the experience with a very different perspective from my undergraduate years, drawing on the professional experience and maturity I had gained over the course of my career.

Graduating as the recipient of the Pearson Education Gold Medal was a meaningful way to conclude that journey. More importantly, MMC reinforced my belief in lifelong learning and showed me that professional experience and academic learning can complement each other in ways that continue to shape how we grow throughout our careers.
