The NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Preparatory Programme (CSPP) is a joint programme between NHG and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) that aims to provide clinicians with an exposure to research in the early phase of their career through research training and project experience.

 

Eligibility

a) Doctors (i.e. clinically qualified with MD/MBBS/BDS) enrolled in the NHG Residency Programme; or with primary appointments as Associate Consultants at NHG institutions;

OR

b) Health science / healthcare professionals with non-medical degrees, such as nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professions listed on MOH’s website in clinical practice, with primary appointments at NHG institutions and at least 3 years of clinical or relevant experience. Others may contact the Secretariat for discussion on suitability of the programme. Applicants should have at least a Bachelors (Hons)/Masters with an Upper Second, preferably First class honours degree in a relevant field. Experience as first or co-author of research publications is preferred but not required.

All applicants should also fulfil the following criteria:

a) Is interested in research but have little or no research experience; and

b) Able to commit time to complete the required CSPP research training.

c) Applicants are recommended to commit an estimated 0.1FTE to complete their research project within the award period, with the approval from their Reporting Officer.

Interested clinicians are strongly encouraged to contact the CSPP Secretariat for discussion on suitability of the Programme prior to submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI).

 

Award Components

 

 

 

Awardees are required to complete the programme within 2 years.

Residents are also required to complete the programme within the duration of their Residency. They are recommended to discuss with their Residency Programme Directors on the feasibility and recommended year to embark on CSPP, as well as the plans to complete the programme within Residency.

Applicants are required to submit all application documents (Table 1) in softcopy to the CSPP Secretariat at NHG Group Research through their Institution’s Clinical Research Unit (CRU) / Clinical Research and Innovation Office (CRIO).

The Institution’s CRU / CRIO will set respective internal deadlines for the above submissions. Please check with your institutions for these deadlines. The Institution’s CRU/ CRIO will ensure that the respective documents reach the CSPP Secretariat by the stipulated deadlines. Applications submitted after the call closing date and time will not be considered.

The NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Preparatory Programme Plus (CSPP+) is a joint programme between NHG and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) that aims to prepare clinicians to embark on formal research training leading to PhD in the early phase of their research careers. The programme would also help them to build up their research experience and generate preliminary data in preparation for competitive research.

 

Eligibility

a) Doctors (i.e., clinically qualified with MD/MBBS/BDS) – Senior Residents enrolled in the NHG Residency Programme with indication of continuation with NHG or Associate Consultants or Consultants (no more than 5 years post-residency exit) with primary appointments at NHG institutions.

OR

b) Health science / healthcare professionals with non-medical degrees, such as nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professions listed on MOH’s website in clinical practice, with primary appointments at NHG institutions and at least 3 years of clinical or relevant experience. Others may contact the CSPP Secretariat for discussion on suitability of the programme.

 

Applicants should have attained at least Bachelors (Hons)/Masters with an Upper Second, preferably First class honours degree in a relevant field. Experience as first or co-author of research publications is preferred but not required.

 

All applicants should also fulfil the following criteria:

a) Have completed the NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Preparatory Programme (CSPP) with good outcomes;

b) Able to commit up to 0.3FTE to complete their research project within the award period, with the approval of their Reporting Officer;

c) Demonstrates commitment to pursue the LKCMedicine PhD by Research Programme.

Interested clinicians are strongly encouraged to contact the CSPP Secretariat for discussion on suitability of the Programme prior to submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI).

 

Award Components

Each awardee will receive the following funding support under the CSPP+ award:

Project funding quantum of up to S$30,000, for up to 1 year; and

Salary support for research FTE of up to 0.3FTE, for up to 1 year

- Up to 0.2FTE* will be provided by NHG Group Research

- Additional top-up of at least 0.1FTE will be provided by the NHG Host Institution

- Salary support will cover the total annual compensation, inclusive of salaries, CPF, fringe
benefits, as well as bonus / incentive payments.

*Annual salary cap by awardee’s clinical designation (Table 1) will apply. NHG Host institution will need to top up the difference if the awardee’s salary exceeds the applicable annual salary cap.

INTRODUCTION

Jointly developed in 2013 by National Healthcare Group (NHG) and Nanyang Technological University’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (NTU/LKCMedicine), the NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Fellowship (CSF) aims to nurture and develop Clinician-Scientists with a formal research training programme leading to PhD.


PROGRAMME
Successful students will be offered admission into the LKCMedicine PhD by Research Programme. For information on the programme, please visit the School’s webpage.


COMPONENTS OF NHG-LKCMEDICINE CSF AWARD
• Salary support;
      -     Research FTE will be provided by NHG and NTU/LKCMedicine for up to 3 years.
      -     Clinical FTE will be provided by NHG Host Institution.
• Sponsorship of tuition fees for up to 4 years through the NTU/LKCMedicine Research Scholarship;

  • •    Academic appointment opportunities with NTU/LKCMedicine upon successful completion of fellowship.

     

    ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

    Applicants should be:

     

    (a)        Doctors (i.e. clinically qualified with MD/MBBS/BDS) with primary appointments at NHG institutions; or are enrolled in their final year of the NHG Residency Programme with indication of continuation in NHG; or

     

    (b)        Health science / healthcare professionals with non-medical degrees, such as nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professionals listed on MOH’s website in clinical practice, with primary appointments at NHG institutions and at least 3 years of clinical or relevant experience. Others may contact the CSF Secretariat for discussion on suitability of the programme.

     

    Applicants should have at least an Upper Second, preferably First class honours degree in a relevant field. A master’s degree is not a pre-requisite but is considered advantageous. 

     

    All applicants should also fulfil the following criteria:

  • •           Have at least 2 years of research experience and well-equipped with knowledge of the fundamentals of clinical research;
  • •           Able to commit at least 0.5FTE to research during the course of study;
  • NMRC Research Training Fellowship (RTF); and
    •           Must fulfil LKCMedicine PhD admission requirements and  NTU/LKCMedicine Research Scholarship eligibility criteria.

    The applicant’s Department should be able to make provisions for the applicant’s research commitments during the CSF award period (if awarded), and continue to facilitate his/her career pathway as a clinician-scientist beyond the CSF award.

     

    Applicants interested to pursue a research PhD with any other local academic institutions (NUS, NTU, SUTD, Duke-NUS, SIT) may contact the CSF Secretariat for further discussion on suitability of the scheme.

     

     

    DURATION OF PROGRAMME
    Students are expected to complete their PhD programme in 4 years. The PhD candidature is a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years.

     


    BOND PERIOD
    Students are required to serve a bond of up to 5 years with their respective NHG Host Institution upon completion of the Fellowship. Bond duration will be commensurate with amount of salary support provided by the Fellowship.

The Clinician-Scientist Career Scheme (CSCS) is a research manpower development programme jointly offered by NHG and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine). It aims to develop research capabilities of clinicians to transform patient care through competitive research and enable them to compete successfully for the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Transition Award (TA)/Clinician Scientist Award (CSA) within the next 2-3 years and further build his/her research career.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants should be:
    1. Doctors (i.e. clinically qualified with MBBS/MD/BDS) with primary appointments of at least Associate Consultant at NHG institutions.

      OR

    2. Health science/healthcare professionals with non-medical degrees, such as nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professions listed on MOH’s website in clinical practice, with primary appointments at NHG institutions and have at least 7 years of clinical or research experience[1]. Clinical post-graduate qualification would be an advantage.

       

  2. All applicants should also fulfil the following criteria:
    1. Has a research PhD
    2. Has a good publication track record in peer-reviewed journals
    3. The CSCS research project should be relevant to the research themes of NHG and LKCMedicine. (Eligible applicants who do not meet this criteria may contact the CSCS Secretariat for further discussion on suitability of the scheme.)

       

  3. On an exceptional basis, an applicant without a PhD could be considered if he/she is committed to enrol into the LKCMedicine PhD programme during the CSCS award period.

     

  4. As awardees are expected to apply to NMRC TA/CSA by the end of their CSCS award period, applicants should take note of the latest eligibility criteria for the respective national talent development scheme and ensure that he/she is able to meet them.

     

  5. Interested clinicians are strongly encouraged to contact the CSCS Secretariat for discussion on suitability of the Programme prior to submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI).

     

  6. Applicants are required to seek endorsements for their applications from their Reporting Officer (RO), Head of Department (HOD), Director/Chief/Head of Family Group (applicable for nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professions listed on MOH’s website only) and Director of Research (DOR).

     

  7. The applicant’s Department should be able to make provisions for the applicant’s research commitments during the CSCS award period (if awarded), and continue to facilitate his/her career pathway as a clinician-scientist beyond the CSCS award.

 

[1] A Job Grade of > 15 is recommended but exceptional applicants could be considered on a case-by-case basis. 


Mentorship

Each applicant is required to nominate a mentor from NHG and a mentor from LKCMedicine (subject to approval by the review committee) to guide them in their research career and project. The CSCS Secretariat may assist in the nomination of appropriate mentor(s) where required.

 

The mentor should be an established clinician scientist or clinical scientist who:

  1. Is involved in research with significant impact on clinical care;
  1. Has had experience as Principal investigator (PI) in a relevant area of research;
  1. Has strong foundation and knowledge in research methodology and conduct;
  1. Has obtained intramural/extramural grant(s) during the past 5 years;
  1. Has an established research track record; and
  1. Has had experience in supervising or providing research mentorship to junior investigators or peers.

     

     Award Components

  1. Project funding quantum up to S$180,000, for up to 3 years; and
  2. Salary support of up to 0.4FTE for up to 3 years, with an applicable annual salary cap by clinician’s clinical designation (Table 1).
  3. Host institution will need to top up the difference if the awardee’s salary exceeds the applicable annual salary cap.
  4. Salary support will cover the total annual compensation, inclusive of salaries, CPF, fringe benefits, as well as bonus / incentive payments.
