Confronting the Climate Crisis: Energy Crunch

First Published Online at CNA

With energy consumption rising in tandem with the recovery from the COVID19 pandemic, the global supply of fossil fuels has not kept up. How can countries tackle this energy crunch while working towards the net zero target?

Marcus Koh, Programme Director at the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N), who leads the Smart Grid and Power Electronics Consortium Singapore (SPECS), said that the energy crunch will have an impact on Singapore’s economic competitiveness, adding that to combat this, EMA have introduced a pre-emptive measure last week to enhance the nation’s energy resilience such as more LNG importers so that we have lower disruption to electricity prices and supply. In addition, at SIEW, the nation is announcing initiatives such as a certification process to ensure that there’s transparency for low carbon initiatives and to boost the uptake of clean energy technology.
