WKWSCI Changemakers Series: Jasmine Ng on Representation and Storytelling in Singapore Cinema

What do Singapore’s films tell us about who we are, and whose stories are being told?

At the latest WKWSCI Changemakers Series session on 24 September 2026, filmmaker Jasmine Ng, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Singapore Association of Motion Picture Professionals, explored the idea of Singapore cinema as a shared "family album", capturing the stories, voices and experiences that make up our society.

Drawing on over three decades of filmmaking experience, Jasmine spoke about the importance of representing Singapore’s diverse communities on screen. She encouraged audiences to venture beyond familiar content and explore films and television programmes in different languages, including Malay, Tamil and Chinese dialects, to better understand the cultures and experiences of those around us.

Jasmine also discussed the changes taking place in Singapore’s film industry and the opportunities for the next generation of filmmakers. She shared how students and young creatives can play a part in telling stories that reflect the diversity of Singapore’s diversity, while encouraging  to encourage greater appreciation and support for local productions.

The session gave students a chance to think about storytelling beyond entertainment, and how the films we make and watch can shape how we see our understanding of Singapore and one another.

Thank you to Jasmine Ng for sharing her experiences and insights with our WKWSCI community, and for encouraging the next generation of storytellers to bring more Singapore stories to the screen.
