Remembering President Wee Kim Wee: A Legacy of Leadership

Humility, compassion, and a steadfast dedication to public service — these are the values that defined Dr Wee Kim Wee, Singapore’s fourth President, and values that continue to inspire generations of communicators at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI)

On 30 August 2025, the WKWSCI family gathered with the Wee family, faculty, alumni, students, and friends of the School for the Remembering President Wee Kim Wee: A Legacy of Leadership Dinner. More than just a commemoration, the evening was a heartfelt celebration of Dr Wee’s life and the enduring principles he stood for.

The impact of the Wee Kim Wee Legacy Fund, established to honour Dr Wee’s contributions and vision, was brought to life through an inspiring panel of alumni beneficiaries. They spoke about how the Fund and its scholarships had shaped their journeys, opening doors to global experiences, creating opportunities for research and professional growth, and easing financial burdens that might otherwise have stood in the way.

A deeply moving highlight of the evening came from Ms Lim Hui Min, granddaughter of Dr Wee. In a personal and heartfelt speech, she shared memories of her grandfather not only as a national leader, but as a teacher, family man, and mentor who infused every interaction with warmth and compassion. Her words offered those present an intimate glimpse into Dr Wee’s humanity, who’s influence was felt as strongly in private as it was in public life.

Students, too, contributed to the commemorative programme by reflecting on Dr Wee’s principles through a school-wide writing contest. The three winning essays were presented to the Wee family as a tribute, underscoring how deeply relevant Dr Wee’s legacy remains for young communicators navigating today’s world.

The evening was filled with moments of warmth, gratitude, and reflection. It honoured the past while casting an eye to the future, reaffirming the School’s commitment to carry forward the values of humility, compassion, and service that Dr Wee embodied. His legacy continues to live on in the WKWSCI community in every act of learning, leadership, and commitment to the greater good.
