Photo exhibition delves into the emotions of the community behind the pandemic

Berita Minggu, 14 Mar, page 4

A series of photos depicting the deserted and gloomy atmosphere of Geylang Serai, donations of pre-dawn meals for foreign workers, family prayers at home and the ambiance of Sultan Mosque on Eid morning last year are on display at the “Picturing the Pandemic: A Visual Record of Covid-19 in Singapore” exhibition at the National Museum. On the eve of Ramadan which begins next month, NTU communication graduate and freelance photographer Mr Zakaria Zainal remembers the bitter period when he took a series of photos of the fasting month amid the new normal last year. He remembered the challenge of getting permission to take photos of 100 foreign workers praying in congregation after breaking their fast at the Singapore Expo, which is a space for community isolation facilities. To ensure his safety, Mr Zakaria, 36, had to wear personal protective equipment and a suit while carrying out his project for the National Museum.
